The construction industry builds our cities, communities, and neighborhoods. The need for workers in this industry isn’t decreasing; in fact, it’s increasing significantly, even while there is a shortage of skilled workers. Even though economic fluctuations can – as in any industry – cause varied ups and downs in the growth of construction jobs, the industry tends to need new workers at an increasing rate.
October is Careers in Construction Month. This is a nationwide campaign led by such organizations as the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) and Build Your Future (BYF). It is intended to address labor shortage by encouraging students or those switching careers to enter the trades, as well as educate the public about the potential for high-earning positions, and career longevity.
One important goal of the campaign is to dispel misconceptions about the construction industry. To that end, information highlights the fact that modern construction involves advanced technology, robotics, and AI alongside diverse roles in project management, engineering, and sustainable design. And of course, the skilled workers who actually build projects in the field are the vital foundation of the industry.
The month of awareness and recognition has spurred dozens of state governors to issue official proclamations accompanied by school visits, job site tours, and industry events.
